Ancestral Puebloan Settlements

Abandoned settlements are not a new phenomenon, even in the Western United States. The native peoples of the region created settlements hundreds of years ago. The Ancestral Puebloan people built cliff dwellings and farmed nearby mesas or river valleys, but abandoned these sites around 1200 to 1300 A.D., probably due to prolonged drought that made agriculture untenable.
