This image shows a human stem cell–derived neuron from a patient with spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. The neuron is fluorescently stained for ATXN2, the protein mutated in SCA2, revealing itself as a flame within the neuron.
By modeling SCA2 in human neurons grown in the laboratory, we can learn how mutant ATXN2 affects neuronal health and viability, revealing how this flame takes hold and how it might be contained.
