The Strip Mining Bill of 1975 was the predecessor of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) of 1977. The 1975 bill was vetoed by President Gerald Ford. The SMCRA added stricter regulations on the mining industry and was signed into law in 1977 under President Jimmy Carter.
