Ski Archive Research Tips
The Utah Ski Archives, held at the University of Utah's Special Collections, spans 125 collections held in the Moving Image & Sound, Photograph, and Manuscripts archives at the Marriott Library. To research these holdings, consult the finding aids to the physical collections and refer to the digitized material selected from those collections, which is available in the Marriott Digital Library.
A finding aid is a resource created by archivists to describe a collection of primary source materials. The finding aid includes background information, including historical and biographical notes, as well as descriptive information on the organization of the physical collection. Organizational information, such as box and folder numbers, will be used by researchers who visit Special Collections to identify sections of a collection retrieve for viewing.
To search the fining aids for the Utah Ski Archive, consult Archives West, a search portal to primary source materials and finding aids in the Western United States. When searching in Archives West, be sure to narrow search results to the University of Utah to view finding aids for our holdings only. The below screenshots will demonstrate searching on "ski*", then narrowing results for the University of Utah (on left pane) will provide researchers with the Utah Ski Archives collections. Please note the sections highlighted in yellow.

The Marriott Digital Library contains nearly 17,000 digitized items from the Utah Ski Archive. While the digital items prepresent a fraction of the physical collection, there is a wealth of historical information on skiing at the University of Utah and within the state readily accessible online. These can be found in a number of formats, most notably from the the Photograph archives. When accessing the Digital Library homepage, find the Utah Ski Archives Photos listed under the University of Utah Marriott Library collections. When searching "ski archives" in the Marriott Digital Library, use facets on the left pane to narrow down results on format or collection. The below screenshot demonstrates when searching "ski archives" in the Marriott Digital Library, the facets on the left indicate collections where this contant can be found.

The Utah Daily Chronicle, newspaper of the University of Utah, contains articles on University's ski teams over the years. Past issues of the Utah Daily Chronicle (1900s to 2000s) can be accessed in the Utah Digtal Newspapers project.
