Sustainability

By Marco Zanetti

The tourism industry plays a negative role in environmental sustainability. Using Utah as an example, there are more people driving cars in the Salt Lake Valley and up the cottonwood canyons. This contributes to the poor air quality and pollution. With global warming, environmental sustainability should be prioritized by the ski industry because without snow, there is no ski industry. Even as the ski industry is vulnerable to global climate change, the use of artificial snowmaking helps reverse that effect as it improves economic sustainability. The use of snowmaking to ensure the industry's economic sustainability is present, it fails to consider environmental and social sustainability. Climate change still affects the core industry, locals and tourists. Where there are opportunities to improve economical sustainability from ski resorts, there need to be more efforts in improving environmental sustainability in the ski industry.
