Health Sciences
Students who called the health sciences campus home in the mid to late 1960s include Janey N. Love (Brown), and Curtis Brown, graduating with Bachelors of Science in Nursing (1965) and Pharmacy (1969). Items in the Digital Library lend insight into their academic activities and career paths, including the "Pharmic Ute" journal, published by the College of Pharmacy beginning in the late 1940’s, and the University of Utah student yearbook, the "Utonian."
Curtis Brown
Curtis Brown ('69) enrolled at the College of Pharmacy after moving to Salt Lake City from Sacramento, California. He was a member of both Phi Delta Chi and the student chapter of the American Pharmaceutical Association. Brown stated in "Pharmic Ute" (Fall 1968), an annual publication produced by the College of Pharmacy, that after graduating he intended to complete his military service before entering retail pharmacy.
At the Annual Convention of the Student Chapter of the American Pharmaceutical Association on May 17, 1968, Brown gave a speech in the Historical Pharmacy section entitled “Great Negroes in the Medical Field,” in which he outlined “the many important achievements of the American Negro” and provided "insight into the vital role which persons of African descent have played in the medical field.” He cited examples of luminaries in "medical and related fields," including George Washington Carver (agricultural science), Dr. Harold D. West (biochemistry), and Dr. Percy L. Julian (chemistry).
Janey N. Love (Brown)
Janey N. Love (Brown) ('65) received her baccalaureate degree from the University of Utah, subsequently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the College of Nursing. In 2021, Brown spoke to the College’s Office of Advancement as a contribution to their collection of alumni stories.
"My favorite memory [as a student at the College of Nursing] was being elected the president of our nursing program, representing the College of Nursing at the National Student Nurse Convention in Atlantic City, 1964; having our nursing students become a part of the University of Utah Student Association in 1964-65."
Brown’s extensive service to the Utah State Nurses’ Association in the late 1960’s included positions as District Chairman of the Nominating Committee, State Chairman for the In-service Educators Conference Group, and as a representative to the Adult Council on Higher Education of Salt Lake Basin as well as the USNA Continuing Education Committee. In 1968 she served as moderator for an informative panel dealing with "[Nursing] Licensure in the State of Utah." In 1969 she was Nursing Service Education Director at the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Brown now lives in San Diego, California.
