Introduction
In May 1874, at Raybould's newsstand in Salt Lake City, a startling newspaper appeared. Enoch's Advocate was comedy with an upper cut. In trenchant prose and merciless parody, it skewered Brigham Young and mocked his most treasured undertaking, The Order of Enoch. The Advocate's superb and occasionally shocking illustrations compelled readers to ponder—perhaps for the first time—Young's leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this exhibit we explore the historical context for Enoch's Advocate, show highlights from its pages, and speculate on who might have published it.
