APPROPRIATIONS

And then after the War,
the general public
became aware
of the neglect of the Indians
and tried to make amends
by appropriating
funds and giving
large amounts of money
to enter beneficial
programs for
the development and
general welfare of the
Navajo people. And then
there were new schools, new roads,
new contracts put in
stipulating Navajos be given
first preference for all jobs
for which they
were qualified. And then
there was uranium
production, which gave the tribe
a rental on the land's
production lease and
royalty payments for the uranium
mined. Then came the oil
and gas boom. Then the lands
were put up for lease
sale, with a bonus offered
per acre. And then there were
stumpage payments from the sale
of trees. Then business
site leases, then interest
on the income already deposited
to the tribe’s account in the U.S.
Treasury. Are you taking all this
down? I am the secretary
of the Navajo Tribal
Council and these
were our appropriations.
I don’t have the records
in my possession to show you
now but I can say is
this is what started
the whole ball of wax.
